Protected Area

El Cielo Biosphere Reserve is situated in the southern part of Tamaulipas state, within the Sierra de Cucharas, a mountain range derived from the Sierra Madre. It protects the northernmost extension of tropical and cloud forests and is one of Mexico's most ecologically rich and diverse places.

Nestled within the heart of the Gran Chaco region in northern Argentina's Chaco Province, El Impenetrable National Park is a testament to the region's biodiversity, unique landscapes, and conservation efforts. This national park encapsulates the essence of the "Impenetrable Region," earning its name from the dense woodlands and limited waterways that characterize the area.

The El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve is Mexico's most diverse evergreen cloud forest and one of the most important sites for bird migration. Its cloud forest is reported to be one of the most extensive remnants in the country and contains the greatest diversity of tree species in North and Central America.

El Tuparro National Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve is located in the eastern plains of Colombia, a flat area bounded by four major rivers. The landscape undulates with a series of small valleys and streams. A few areas are permanently flooded during parts of the year.

The Whale Sanctuary of El Vizcaino, a World Heritage site, is located on the Pacific Coast of the central part of the Baja California Peninsula and is embedded in the much larger El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, encompassing desert, mountain, coastal, and marine ecosystems.

El Yunque National Forest is a forest reserve located in northeastern Puerto Rico on the slopes of the Sierra de Luquillo mountains. It is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. High annual rainfall creates a jungle-like setting with lush foliage, crags, waterfalls, and rivers.

Nestled off the northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico lies a marine marvel that captivates the imagination and embodies the richness of biodiversity—the Arrecife Alacranes National Park and Biosphere Reserve. Nestled along the northern coast of Peru lies the captivating Noroeste Amotapes-Manglares Biosphere Reserve, a mosaic of diverse habitats, includes Cerros de Amotape National Park, the Coto de Caza El Angolo, and the Manglares de Tumbes National Sanctuary. It was merged with the Bosque Seco Biosphere Reserve in Ecuador to form the Bosques de Paz Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, highlighting its regional importance in biodiversity conservation.

Nestled within the heart of Brazil, the Mata Atlântica Biosphere Reserve stands as a testament to the country's commitment to preserving its rich natural heritage. It proudly holds the distinction of being the pioneer among Brazilian biosphere reserves. This expansive reserve encompasses critical portions of the Atlantic Forest, including the entire coastal stretch from Ceará to Rio Grande do Sul.
