The Altiplano, also called Puna, is a region in west-central South America in the area where the Andes are the widest. It is the most extensive area of high plateau on Earth outside Tibet. The bulk of the Altiplano lies in Bolivia but its northern parts lie in Peru and its southern parts lie in Chile and Argentina.

The Andean Patagonian Forest spreads over steep elevations along a thin strip on both sides of the Andes Mountains in southern South America. These temperate forests, located in both southern Chile and Argentina, are the southernmost forests on earth.

The Atlantic Forest, or Mata Atlântica, extends along the Atlantic coast of northeast Brazil, south along the coastline and inland into northeast Argentina and eastern Paraguay. Although only a small part of the original forests remain it is still one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet.
