Protected Area

The Cuchillas del Toa Biosphere Reserve is located in the northeastern region of Cuba. It protects tropical wet forests and coastal/marine ecosystems within the mountain region of Sagua-Garacoa and much of the Toa River watershed. It is considered one of Cuba's principal centers of biodiversity and endemism.

Cutervo National Park, located in the northern Peruvian Andes, is Peru's oldest protected area. It was created to preserve flora and fauna diversity and the archaeological remains of the Cordillera de Tarros, which is home to the last cloud forests of Cajamarca and various ecosystems of native species.

Darién National Park and Biosphere Reserve is the largest protected area in Panama and a World Heritage Site containing an exceptional variety of habitats: sandy beaches, rocky coasts, mangroves, and swamps, as well as lowland and upland tropical forests containing remarkable wildlife.

The Delta del Paraná Biosphere Reserve comprises the coastal freshwater delta of the Paraná River located just north of Buenos Aires. Predelta National Park is located where the river sediments start forming islands. It is an area rich in biodiversity, including species that find their southernmost limit of distribution.

Desembarco del Granma National Park, meaning "Landing of the Granma", is situated on the southwestern tip of southeast Cuba. The little-disturbed landscape and seascape offer a wide spectrum of karst phenomena, such as giant sinkholes, cliffs, canyons and caves.

Two conservation areas on Cuba's northern coast, Caguanes National Park and Buenavista Biosphere Reserve, are prime examples of environmental stewardship and cultural preservation. They form a harmonious blend of natural wonders and historical legacies, weaving Cuba's ecological richness and cultural heritage together. As guardians of diverse ecosystems and custodians of ancient traditions, they emerge as beacons of conservation in the Caribbean.

Nestled on the picturesque Nicoya Peninsula in western Costa Rica, Barra Honda National Park stands as a testament to the country's geological marvels and rich biodiversity. Established in 1974, this protected area in the province of Guanacaste encompasses a fascinating landscape shaped by millions of years of geological processes and teeming with diverse flora and fauna.

The Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve in southwest Bolivia, its most visited protected area, contains an extensive range of landscapes, including volcanic mountain peaks, hot springs, geysers, lakes, fumaroles, and windswept deserts.

El Cajas National Park is located in southern Ecuador and features tundra vegetation on a spectacular jagged landscape of hills and valleys. This results in a spectacular landscape where the outcrops alternate with a myriad of lakes and lagoons in the páramo of Cajas.

The El Chaco Biosphere Reserve covers a large area in Paraguay's northern part of the boreal El Chaco system, with ecologically diverse dry forest ecosystems under tremendous pressure to be converted into grazing lands. The reserve has six core areas, all protected areas.
