Protected Areas in Colombia

Serranía de Macuira is a mountain range and National Park in the middle of the La Guajira Desert on Colombia's Caribbean coast. Home to the indigenous Wayú, it covers most of the La Guajira Peninsula at the northernmost tip of South America.

The Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary is a large marine protected area off Colombia's Pacific coast. This World Heritage Site includes the barren Malpelo Island, its rocky outcroppings, and the surrounding marine environment, recognized as one of the top diving sites in the world.

Formed by the most extensive and diverse coral reefs in the Colombian Caribbean continental coastline, the Rosario and San Bernardo archipelagos are protected by the Rosario and San Bernardo Corals National Natural Park.

The San Agustín Archaeological Park is located near the town of San Agustín in the Huila Department of Colombia. It represents the cultural and artistic achievements of a civilization that existed from the 1st to the 8th century in the northern Andean region. The park consists of three separate properties known as San Agustín, Alto de los Ídolos, and Alto de Las Piedras. It is home to South America's most extensive collection of religious monuments and megalithic sculptures.

The Seaflower Biosphere Reserve encompasses the entire land and marine territory of the San Andrés Archipelago in the southwestern Caribbean Sea. The archipelago, which forms the West Indies Department of Colombia, supports diverse marine and bird life and extensive coral reefs.

The Serranía de Chiribiquete are isolated table mountains in the Amazon Region of Colombia at the confluence point of four biogeographical provinces. Chiribiquete National Park - "The Maloca of the Jaguar" is a World Heritage site with natural and cultural significance.

The Sierra Nevada de Güicán, El Cocuy and Chita are located within the Cordillera Oriental range of the Colombian Andes.  El Cocuy National Natural Park protects its extraordinary biodiversity and endemism and its function as a corridor for migratory species.

Nestled along the northern coast of Colombia, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Natural Park stands as a testament to the country's rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. Colombia's second oldest national park encompasses diverse ecosystems, from pristine beaches to snow-capped mountain peaks. Drawing its name from the ancient Tairona people, this coastal sanctuary is cradled by the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and embraced by the Caribbean Sea.

The Sumapaz Páramo is a stunningly beautiful and ecologically important region in the Colombian Andes. It is the largest moorland ecosystem on the planet and features vast expanses of high mountain grasslands, rugged peaks, rolling hills, and vibrant colors. Sumapaz National Natural Park safeguards this area and serves as a sanctuary for countless species of flora and fauna amidst the pristine wilderness.
