Campos Amazônicos National Park

Campos Amazônicos National Park is located in northwestern Brazil. Its total area of 961,320 ha (2,375,473 acres) stretches through the state of Amazonas, crossing into the neighboring states of Rondônia and Mato Grosso.

The park lies to the south of the Trans-Amazonian Highway (BR-230). It is bordered to the south by the Tucumã State Park in Mato Grosso and the Manicoré State Forest and Guariba Extractive Reserve in Amazonas.

Campos Amazônicos National Park forms part of an ecological corridor that includes:

  • Xingu Indigenous Park in the states of Mato Grosso and Pará

  • Terra do Meio Mosaic in the state of Pará

  • Juruena National Park in the states of Amazonas and Mato Grosso

  • Apuí Mosaic in the state of Amazonas

The corridor is intended to contain agricultural expansion into the central Amazon region and deforestation of the rainforest. The Amazon Region Protected Areas Program supports the park.

The terrain is generally flat, with some gently rolling stretches. It is laced with slow, meandering rivers. It contains parts of the Machado and Roosevelt river basins and the headwaters of the dos Marmelos and Manicoré rivers.

The Roosevelt River flows through the park from south to north. The Jiparaná River (Machado River) forms the park's southern boundary in Rondônia.

Campos Amazônicos National Park is located within the Amazon biome. The average annual rainfall is 2,300 mm (91 in). Temperatures range from 12 to 32 °C (54 to 90 °F) with an average of 27 °C (81 °F).

The park holds an essential enclave of cerrado, including grasslands, campos sujos and cerradão in the areas of contact with the forest and gallery forest in the wetlands. It also contains typical dense Amazon rainforest and open rainforest.

Few detailed studies of flora and fauna have been undertaken. The Manicore marmoset (Mico manicorensis) was discovered in the forest. Biologists see the savanna enclaves as vital in understanding the evolutionary dynamics of the Amazonian biota. There is a high diversity of birds.

The forest may provide a breeding ground for several commercially important fish species. Mixed groups of woolly monkeys and white-nosed saki (Chiropotes albinasus) have been observed, an unusual occurrence in the Amazon.

Classed as IUCN protected area category II (national park), the Campos Amazônicos National Park is administered by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio).
