Biosphere Reserves

Biosphere Reserves by Country within Latin America and the Caribbean

The UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves covers internationally designated protected areas that are nominated by national governments and remain under the sovereign jurisdiction of the states where they are located.

Biosphere Reserves are areas comprising terrestrial, marine and coastal ecosystems. Each reserve promotes solutions reconciling the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable use.

The major objectives of Biosphere Reserves are: (i) To conserve the diversity and integrity of plants, animals and micro-organisms; (ii) To promote research on ecological conservation and other environmental aspects and; (iii) To provide facilities for education, awareness and training.
