Biosphere Reserves in Argentina

The Andino Norpatagónica Biosphere Reserve is located in Argentina's northwestern Patagonia. It comprises five National Parks and numerous other protected areas. The landscape is primarily mountainous, dominated by the Andes in the west, with sub-Andean plains and plateaus in the east.

The Delta del Paraná Biosphere Reserve comprises the coastal freshwater delta of the Paraná River located just north of Buenos Aires. Predelta National Park is located where the river sediments start forming islands. It is an area rich in biodiversity, including species that find their southernmost limit of distribution.

With altitudes reaching almost 6,000 m (19,685 ft), the Laguna Blanca Biosphere Reserve features a typical arid Andean landscape, with a saline lake in the main depression and surrounding rocky formations. It is located in the Andean natural region of northwest Argentina.

The Laguna de los Pozuelos Natural Monument and Biosphere Reserve are located in the extreme north of Jujuy, Argentina, in the highlands of the southern central Andes. The highland lagoon and drainage basin is a conservation priority within the Central Andean dry Puna ecoregion.

The Laguna Oca y Herraduras del Río Paraguay Biosphere Reserve is located along a meandering bend of the Paraguay River near the city of Formosa in northern Argentina. The area of the Reserve constitutes part of the Paraguay River floodplain and includes the Oca Lagoon.

The Las Yungas Biosphere Reserve, located in northwestern Argentina's mountainous Andean Range, encompasses a rich diversity of landscapes from the high Andean mountain forest ecosystems to Chaco Serrano, cloud forests, montane forests, grasslands, and agricultural land.

Nestled within the Chaco savanna region just north of Mar de Plata on the Atlantic coast in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, the Mar Chiquita Biosphere Reserve is a testament to the remarkable biodiversity and ecological significance of Argentina's coastal plains. Comprising the 'Parque Atlántico Mar Chiquita,' this reserve boasts a rich tapestry of habitats, ranging from expansive savannas to hyper-saline lakes, offering sanctuary to a diverse array of flora and fauna.

The Ñacuñan Biosphere Reserve is located in the Argentine province of Mendoza, in the plains at the foot of the Andes. The area consists of semi-arid upland grasslands, shrubby steppe, matorral, and shrubby and herbaceous woodlands and wetlands.

The Patagonia Azul Biosphere Reserve encompasses the greatest biodiversity on the Argentine coastline. The area includes important breeding, feeding and migration sites for various species. It also hosts the world's largest colony of Magellanic penguins.

Pereyra Iraola Provincial Park and Biosphere Reserve are located along the banks of the Río de la Plata in the northeastern part of Argentina's Buenos Aires Province. It is the province's largest urban park and its richest center of biodiversity.
