The Andes are the longest continental mountain range in the world, forming a continuous highland along the western edge of South America. Extremely high plateaus surmounted by even higher peaks form a rampart from the southern tip of South America to the continent’s northernmost coast on the Caribbean.

Gran Chaco (South America)

The Gran Chaco is a sparsely populated, hot and semi-arid lowland alluvial plain, divided among eastern Bolivia, western Paraguay, northern Argentina and a portion of Brazil. With a high biodiversity, it contains South America's second largest forest, behind only the Amazon Rainforest.
