Biosphere Reserves in the Caribbean

The Baconao Park and Biosphere Reserve is located in the southeastern region of Cuba, between Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo. This vast reserve is a crucial sanctuary for biodiversity, home to many ecosystems and unique species. The reserve spans three distinct biogeographic zones, each contributing to its diverse range of flora and fauna. The Cuchillas del Toa Biosphere Reserve is located in the northeastern region of Cuba. It protects tropical wet forests and coastal/marine ecosystems within the mountain region of Sagua-Garacoa and much of the Toa River watershed. It is considered one of Cuba's principal centers of biodiversity and endemism.

Two conservation areas on Cuba's northern coast, Caguanes National Park and Buenavista Biosphere Reserve, are prime examples of environmental stewardship and cultural preservation. This remote and sparsely populated region is home to a National Park and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, making it a prime destination for nature enthusiasts and conservation-minded travelers.

The Guánica Biosphere Reserve in southwestern Puerto Rico comprises coastal areas with mangrove cays and subtropical dry forests. Designated Guánica State Forest in 1919, it is considered the best-preserved subtropical forest and the best example of a dry forest in the Caribbean.

This transboundary Biosphere Reserve includes the biodiverse reserves of La Selle in Haiti and Jaragua-Bahoruco-Enriquillo in the Dominican Republic. These reserves include the La Visite National Park in Haiti and the Lago Enriquillo National Park in the Dominican Republic.

The Massif de la Hotte is a mountain range in southwestern Haiti located in southeastern Haiti. La Hotte Biosphere Reserve includes six mountain peaks and encompasses terrestrial and marine areas. The region is considered a biodiversity hotspot due to the wide variation in climate.

The Northeast Tobago Biosphere Reserve is located within the northeast region of the island of Tobago, comprised of a large marine and terrestrial area. It presents a rare Caribbean island ridge-to-ocean ecosystem, including the world's oldest tropical rainforest reserve.
