Protected Areas in South America

The Kanuku Mountains are a mountain group located within the Rupununi natural region in southwestern Guyana. The east-west range divides the Rupununi from the north's wetlands and the south's savannas. The mountains have been designated a National Protected Area.

Kawésqar National Park covers an immense swath of Chile's western Patagonian archipelago. Populated with low mountain-like islands and islets among a myriad of channels and fjords, its landscapes are a mosaic of forests, glaciers, lakes, and wetlands.

Located in the Valparaíso Region of Chile, La Campana-Peñuelas Biosphere Reserve includes both La Campana National Park and Lago Peñuelas National Reserve. Forests here are habitats for the Chilean Wine Palm.

Lago Puelo National Park is located in Chubut province, Argentina, within the Patagonia forest ecoregion. Due to its low elevation, geographical environment, and geologic formation, the park is home to many endemic flora species and exhibits beautiful scenery and exceptional weather.

With altitudes that can reach over 19,000 ft above sea level, the Laguna Blanca Biosphere Reserve in northwestern Argentina, features a typical arid Andean landscape, with a saline lake in a main depression and surrounding rocky formations.

The Laguna de los Pozuelos Natural Monument and Biosphere Reserve is located in the extreme north of the Argentine Province of Jujuy and is part of the highlands of the Southern Central Andes. It is identified as a conservation priority.

The Laguna Oca y Herraduras del Río Paraguay Biosphere Reserve is located along a meandering bend of the Paraguay River near the city of Formosa, in northern Argentina. The area of the reserve constitutes part of the Paraguay River floodplain and includes the Oca Lagoon.

Laguna San Rafael National Park and Biosphere Reserve in southern Chile is an area of highly varied topography and scenic beauty. The area includes the Continental Patagonian Range, the Insular Patagonian Range, the Central Plain, and the Patagonian Glaciers.

Lanín National Park is located in the southern part of Neuquén Province, Argentina, within Argentine Patagonia. Created in 1937 to protect and preserve an area of Andean-Patagonian Forests, it takes its name from its highest peak, the Lanín volcano, on the border with Chile.

The Las Yungas Biosphere Reserve, located in northwestern Argentina's mountainous Andean Range, encompasses a rich diversity of landscapes from the high Andean mountain forest ecosystems to Chaco Serrano, cloud forests, montane forests, grasslands, and agricultural land.
